What is the name of your state? MD

I'm the custodial parent of my sons ( 13 & 14 ). I have full, sole custody. My ex, being the NCP, has visitations and would like to be 'more involved' in the boys lives. One being access to their school records and teachers. The boys are doing well in school and I'm not sure whether I would agree with her having access to the kids school stuff. I am willing to provide copies of the report cards. My question, finally, do I even have a say as to whether or not the NCP can have access to the kids school stuff - specifically, meetings/conferences with teachers without my knowledge, etc.

Thank you.

Why would you be worried about the NCP having access to school records? What harm could they do?
I dont know leagally what you could do, but I would think if you were concerned, you could explain things to the school and ask that if NCP asked for information of schedules a conference that you be informed.

Under Federal Law , FERPA , either Parent is entitled to Basic Educational records , unless barred by a Court Order .

The term Educational Records is defined as those records which contain information directly related to a student and which are maintained by an Educational agency or institution or by a Party acting for an agency or institution .

There's two issues I'm concerned about. I now understand about the school records. However, what about her (NCP) access to teachers, etc. I'm concerned about her having conferences with teachers without my knowledge, or even, removing the kids from school with out my knowledge. Things are going well for my kids at school and really don't want her to rock the boat on this.

She has - and SHOULD have - every right to have conferences with the teacher about the kids' progress. She is also their parent. You have no right to bar that access.

As for her removing them from school, presumably the school has a copy of your custody order - they won't release the kids unless it is her custodial time.

Back when my husbands ex had sole custody of my step son, my husband had phone conferences with his sons teachers/ school counselors. He could not get the info from his ex, so he had to go to the school.. He did this without the ex's knowledge.

Now the shoe's on the other foot. My husband has custody, and not once has his ex asked about my step son's grades or to speak with the teacher.

Just remember, she is their mother too.. at least she wants to be more involved unlike my husbands ex.

What is it with some CP's who have sole custody acting like they are God? What makes them think that they have some special privilege that the other parent shouldn't have? It's pretty sick, if you ask me.

check your state but in NJ both parents have a right to educational records unless otherwise specified. All she has to do is call and request them.

If NCP sends a copy of current custody order to the school, stating she has shared legal rights pertaining to medical, education, and religion, they will file this with your childs permanent record, and there is nothing you can do to stop her from receiving any information. I have just done this at my sons school and the same day they received a copy, I received a report card. Let her be involved, she is the mother.

Why is it a big deal?
