I'm in California. I want a divorce from my husband, but I can't afford a lawyer. I have looked into Pro Per proceedings but I'm afraid to go forth without council because we have two children together. He continually demands that I give him full custody of our son while I have full custody of our daughter. I don't want to split my children up, I believe it would be in their best interest for them to stay together and we share joint custody of the kids. Ultimately, I believe he is using the children in a desperate attempt to keep me from divorcing him.

I am a full time student and live solely off the money I receive from my GI Bill (less than $1000/mo). I know I am not entitled to a court appointed lawyer in this matter. Where can I go? Am I simply destined to be subject to his demands?

Thank you.

My response:

You can do one of two things:

1. Contact the State Bar of California and ask if there is anyone on their "Pro Bono" panel of attorneys or for low cost legal assistance (based upon your income and ability to pay).

2. If #1 doesn't work, you can always buy a book on the subject from Barnes and Noble, and try to do this yourself.
