What is the name of your state? New Jersey.

I have been contemplating bankruptcy for some time now, and recently received notification that I am being sued by one of my creditors for the amount owed. I received notification on June 7th and have 20 days to reply. Do I have enough time and would this matter be resolved by filing for bankruptcy and how much will a lawyer ask for up front to handle a bankruptcy? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

10 days is plenty of time to file for bk and it would sure resolve the matter. Upon filing, you get an automatic stay and upon discharge, the debt is eliminated.

Most lawyers give free initial consultations. Make an appointment with one and see about the fee stucture. There will be a $200 filing fee.
