What is the name of your state?NM
I have a partner and we run a small business (bounce Castles), my 7 yr old daughter had a function a school. I was planning on going as a parent. But the School requested our service.
3 bouncers (400 lbs a piece), My partner and my son 18 yrs were going to do it, but parnter came down with strep throat. So I had to do it. The school is in the better side of town. I wasn't going to wear a dress, so I opt for jean crops and t-Shirt. I had bought some for the business and I had forgotten my son's. OK, the parking at the school is unreal. The program was to be over at 6:00 and the games would begin. So we met up there, I pulled in front of Gym with trailer at drop off/pu kids then there is parking. Well the teachers did not want us to store the bouncers in the gym, but wanted them to be set up at 6:00. So we unloaded them from the truck and trailer and placed them by the gym doors. Admittance was in the front doors of school. Anyway, we finally got them in the gym dispite all the parents. Then I was able to go with my daughter to the different games. My son was with me. When our arms got full with prizes or food, we would walk back to the truck and unload. I smoke and so does my son. In discretion I told my son not to let anyone see us smoking. So anyway, the carnival was to end at 8:00. at 7:45 we headed to the truck to rest before having to roll up the bouncers. My daughter and I stopped at a booth, my son went ahead. When I reached the truck, had been there about 5 minutes, this man (a parent) in street clothes, came walking up to the truck. My son was in the drivers side, iwas on the other, he started pointing at my son. I asked my son if he knew him, he did not. I told him to see what he wanted. He got out of the truck and the man walked to his side. At that time some of my friends walked up. I got out of the truck and was saying hello. I was curious about the man, and I could not hear what was being said, I saw my son talking back with a funny look, looking for me as well. I walked around and stood there. I heard him say he was a policeman. The man asked me if I was the owner of the truck. I told him yes. He started telling me that a parent complained that my son was smoking marijuana in the truck and he wanted to search it. I was dumbstruck. I told him we had just came back to the truck. He told me To agree or I could say no. So I didn't want 16 police cars surrounding the truck, I consented. We stood outside of the truck and he went through it. Then he kinda waved his hand, and left. About 5 minutes later because it was 3 minutes until 8:00. The policeman and principle and the three teachers that had rented came out the gym doors and were having a conversation. Mostlly the policeman. We were parked probably 5 feet away behind them. Then the principle came up to the truck, and informed me that they were going to shut the bouncers down. I said OK, she walked off. They proceeded in the gym, I followed, the policeman left and they again had a conversation between the 4 of them. The children were still on the bouncers, and another person not a teacher, was having them quit. I thought to myself that it was ok because it was 8:00. I was upset for being accused of smoking marajuana, letting the parent exerciser his rights, and did not find anything and still the conversations were still going on. I walked up to them and the principle left. I asked them if there was a problem. They started shuddering, saying oh its time to close down, I told them that we had been accused and gave the policeman permission and he did not find anything. They said they didn't know but there was a complaint. Then they disappeared. I told my son don't be surprised if the police showed up. We got the bouncers rolled up and it was about 9:00 p.m. before we left. We had given the school a special discount for that evening because they booked them again for last day of school. Today the teacher called and left message she needed to cancel them. We have other appointments with the other elementary schools as well. This makes me very upset. My question is since the parent policeman followed up on the complaint, why did he not follow up on who made the false report? Why was it still an issue with us? What can I do to clear our business name up? The parent (policeman) did not tell me his name, I should have asked but was stunned. I don't know if they realize I was my son's parent, or that I have a child that goes to the school. I really feel that because we were in the work truck, nothing special, 2001 ford ranger, not a SUV or Chrys 300 that they thought we were carnival bums in our t-shirts and jeans. Please advise me

What false complaint? Was there a police report?

Perhaps someone saw your son sitting in the truck holding a cigarette in the manner someone would normally hold a joint (come on, you secret and not so secret tokers....you know what I mean:p) and honestly was concerned that your son, who was partly responsible for the bounce houses, was quietly getting happily stoned.

FYI...Neither of you should have been smoking on school grounds, whether it was pot, cigs, or banana peels. I'd be willing to bet that there are school rules that there is no smoking on campus. If not, there certainly should be.

(and no, I'm not some anti-smoking fanatic)

I will admit that if I thought smoking a cigarette would raise suspicion we would have not smoked. I did not think smoking in your vehicle on school grounds is against the Law? We had been waiting for 5 hrs and shared a cigarette. Does that warrant false accusations? Why didn't the Parent policeman tell us or at least let them know it was cigarettes? My daughter goes to school there, I feel as though my reputation has been slandered

Maybe he DID let them know it was just cigs and they were still uncomfortable with that. You don't KNOW that he didn't tell them that it was the legal form of smoking taking place.

It's may not be against the law to smoke on school grounds (but for all a I know, there is an ordinance like one here in Dallas) but I would be willing to lay odds that it is agains the school rules.

The fact is that you and your son WERE caught smoking on school grounds while you were on the job. I can't imagine that is something that any administrator wants to deal with.

We deliver and pick up only! The school was paying for the use of the bouncers, not my services. I was there with my daughter, we do live in the outside of town and with the price of gas, it was not feasible to leave to come back. There is a law about smoking on school grounds, I guess I did not realize that means not in your vehicle, not behind the tree, not across the street, not anywhere Dr. Seuss! I don't believe I am the only parent that smokes. Do you not think any other parent did not put their cig out before entering the school?

Most school properties are considered "Drug Free Zones", so it is not surprising that smoking is not allowed at the school or on its property, including in the vehicles parked in the lots. Usually signs are posted.

If you think the cancellations of your bouncers, scheduled for the last day of school, are due to an erroneous report about you and your son smoking marijuana while on school grounds, you should probably get that cleared up, by requesting a report from the policeman - ask for the complaint issued and the findings. I would also speak personally with the principal of the school.

Although it is slanderous to say that someone is using illegal drugs when they are not, you would have a hard time showing that any false complaint about marijuana use was connected to the cancellations. Because you were violating school policy by smoking anything on school grounds, that alone could lead the school to reconsider the use of the bouncers from your company.

Although you certainly did not need to be "professional" as a parent attending your daughter's school fair, you should have considered the possible repercussions to your business by not being professional representing your "bounce Castle" business. It is never wise to smoke, school grounds or not, when you are representing your business (unless, perhaps, you work for a tobacco company).
