what's the best way to settle a lawsuit so it doesn't go to court. i don't have much of a defense and will probably lose, but can't make a lump sum payment. can anyone help?

Your only options are to pay the claimed debt (if accurate) or to negotiate a payment plan. Or you can consider filing for bankruptcy, if warranted.
