What is the name of your state? Ohio

I have a 17 year old daughter who lives in Michigan with my ex-wife. My ex kept her out her out of my life since she was 3. We went to court for the child support issue and we paid a lump sum for past present and future child support. I never signed away my rights. But I have not seen my daughter in all these years. When she turned 17 my daughter contacted me. I have been to Michigan to see her and now we are starting to build a relationship. She wants to come to visit me in Ohio and meet my family and her brothers and sisters. She wants to just come for a weekend. I need to know if she comes to Ohio can her mother do anything legally to stop her. Like claiming she ran away or call the police on me. Her mother more or less kicked her out she is staying with friends. Is there any legal consequences or can she come to visit me on her . I am desperate to have her in my life again. Please help

Do you have ANY court ordered visitation? If not, why?

I understand how important it is to be reunited with your daughter. However, there may be more going on than you realize between your daughter and her mother, and it might be a problem for you to encourage her to leave the state to visit you without mom's permission.

I would recommend that you take the whole family to MI to visit her there until you have a better handle on what's going on.....or until she turns 18.

in my original divorce papers it does state that I have specific visitation. after my divirce I moved out of state and started my life over. it was about a year before I tried to contact my ex to see my daughter when I did finally find her she told me because I had been gone for a year that I no longer had visitation rights is this true? I realize my mistakes and regret that I didn't push the issue. I felt maybe my daughter was better off without me. Now after all these years she wants to be a part of my life. Is my original visitation order still valid or no.

Check the courthouse and see if the order was ever modified. If you still have weekend visitaion, and the order was never modified, you are legally allowed to have your daughter on whatever weekend your visitation would have fallen. If the CO does NOT specify all visitation must be in state, then you can take her to your state for what would still be legally Court ordered visitation.

While I agree with you technically, its been 14 years since he stepped out of his daughter's life. Therefore I still think its a risky thing to do. We can't be certain that mom couldn't turn it into an Amber Alert situation. Particularly since we don't know what is going on between mom and the child.

The child has said that mom kicked her out....but for all we know she may have run away and has already been reported as such...or is about to be reported as such, independent of anything to do with dad.

Therefore I stick by my original advice. For DAD's sake I don't think he should take her out of state without clearing it with mom....or at least until he is totally clear on what's going on between her and mom....particularly since its less than a year until she turns 18.

I am recommending erring on the side of caution.
