to appear in court for a hearing do you have to be served legally so you will know when where etc? or is it legal serving just by hearsay?

i live in va. and they require that you be served by a deputy or other legal person.your ex just can't tell you that you have to be there in court.when served it will say when, where and time of court. your best bet is to call the juvenile and domestic court in the city or county where you and the ex lives and they can give you all info. and tell if a case is pending or not.
