I received a phone call last week from a collections agency regarding a debt that had been turned over to them. It was a medical debt that was being sent to the wrong address.
According to the collections agency, they will have had the debt for 60 days on Dec. 11. If I pay it by then, it will not affect my credit history. I finally was able to talk to someone at my dentist's office in order to verify the debt yesterday. I called the collections agency today, and they are refusing to put anything in writing regarding the 60 day grace period. They will not send me a statement stating that if it is paid by the 11th it will not affect my credit history, nor will they send me a statement stating the date that they received the debt and their 60 days company policy.
I don't trust them for a second. I think they're just telling me what I want to hear so I'll pay it and it's still going to go on my credit history. Can I do anything to keep this off of my credit history since I technically was NOT notified of the debt until last week?
I finally received a statement from the Collections agency and it said that I should send a letter within 30 days from the receipt of the bill requesting verification. If I do this, will it give me a grace period with which to pay the debt before they can report it?
PLEASE let me know what I can do. Should I call back with a tape recorder on the phone and get the same information again?
