What is the name of your state? Wisconsin

This is my first post and I need some advice. Upon just graduating from a mechanic school, I went to work for a dealership. After working there for about 7-8 months I hurt my back at work and my doctor took me off work for one month due to a bulging disk in my back. Upon returning to work I seen co-employees and the owners making fun of me (leaning over and saying "oh, my back. my back). I was fired three days after returning to work. My lawyer said I could no nothing about it since I wasn't in a union. They also tried to tell me that they were going to put me on temporary disability that this wasn't work comp even though I knew better. However, after being fired, I filed my work comp suite and had the company pay my doctor bills. These were new owners who just bought out the dealership. I thought it was bad that they didn't even want to pay my doctor bills and made fun of me since my back was so bad I would walk and fall on the floor and flop like a fish until my back straightened out. Anyway, I have been having a bad feeling that were giving me bad references, but I just gained a very good job since moving out of state to Wisconsin. This happened in Illinois. Last week, while my loan officer was working on my refinance of my home, her assistant had to call for an employment verification. Apparantly, the dealership in Illinois said that I was the worst employee ever and they had to go through litigations with me and they were not going to fill out the employment verification paperwork, which held up my loan. And they never did. My loan officer got around it, thankfully. However, she called to let me know that these things were said about me because she said during an employment verification they can only answer the questions asked about my work period, etc. and by law they cannot say anything else about me. Especially, not like that. She said if I wanted to go into litigation for this they would be happy to testify as what they did was wrong. What I need to know is: Is this correct, that what they did is illegal and is it worth doing something about it? What can I gain besides legal fees? I don't much about this but this former employer has evidently been a pain in my side since my injury. I don't want them to able to get away with it.

Your loan officer is an idiot. They can give their opinion if they want. The loan officer doesn't have to listen.

And they are not under any legal obligation to fill out the paperwork.

Based on the facts as presented, you have nothing. Forget it and move on.

**A: drop it. It would not be worth litigating.

There is a widespread but incorrect belief among many, many people that an employer is limited to dates of employment and job title when giving references. Occasionally salary and/or eligibility for rehire are also included in this belief.

This belief is wrong. An employer is perfectly free to give any information they choose to, as long as it is true or the honest opinion of the employer.
