What is the name of your state? MN

I got a DUI in Florida in 1983 while on vacation. I took care of it when I got back to Minnesota. I paid a fine, had my DL revoked, retested, went to Alcohol information classes, etc.

I still live in MN. When I attempted to have my DL renewed in MN a few months ago, they at first refused, saying there something on my driving record that would make me ineligible to get a DL in FL, thus, they were going to deny it here also. They eventually gave me the license, but put in my record that this must be "cleaned up" before they would renew it next time. I contacted Pinelles County in FL, where the DUI occured, and they have no records that far back, and said they couldn't help me. I contacted my own county to prove everything thing was taken care of, and they also have no records back that far. I have no paperwork from the incident; it was all thrown away many years ago. I suspect I won't be renewed next time. Any suggestions?

I had a clerical error here in Florida that screwed up renewing my license long after I'd completed all my penalties. No one wanted to help me, the court pointed to DMV, DMV pointed to the court, my lawyer acted like we'd never met before, etc. I finally had to take matters into my own hands and wrote to the big shots in the DMV, or here in Florida that is the Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Division of Driver Licenses. Here is a link with addresses and phone numbers. I suggest a letter writing campaign, with copies of anything you can include and all the dead ends you've run into hence:

http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/html/contact.html

Here is the name of the director of that department:
Fred O. Dickinson, Executive Director, (850) 487-3132

I recommend a firm but fair approach, respectful and accurate, demanding but gently so.

Just wanted to add that when I made the contact you recommended, all they asked for was a faxed copy of my current DL, and it has been taken care of already. Thanks again.
