Alabama, We moved into rental house we are in due to not finding another place we could afford on short notice. We agreed to help fix up this house for reduced rent caretaker has all materials needed to do so in his garage. We looked at house before we moved but was dusk and no power on in house so couldn't see how much really needed to be done as well as see what caretakers had done. It was after dusk when we starting unloading the moving truck on 6/1 so we didn't see the extent of what needed to be done until the next morn but were still willing to help fix it for reduced rent anyways, The first issue we had and still have are the leaks we had when water was turned on we had fountains behind toilet, tub at faucet, kitchen sink, behind water heater as well as under house. The caretaker jerked kitchen sink and cabinets out to stop that leak telling us he has new sink and cabinets for house in his garage he'd have move things around to get to it and piece of flooring to replace rotten flooring where sink sat. He stopped leak under house, my friend fixed the one behind water heater but tub faucet leaks at hot water side and toilet leaks under tank and at bottom gasket. Again care taken has faucet and toilet in garage just has to move things around to get to them . We've not seen any materials yet so have turn water on in morning fill up tub wash dishes and drinking/cooking water then turn it back off til later in evening when we empty tub clean it then fill it with bath water.
We we had power turned on found out 15 mins after power co closed that the wiring would have be checked see if was up to code before lights could be turned on so we went 5 days w/o power lost all the meat and perishables we'd moved w us plus spent a lot of money on food we could cook or heat up on small grill we have had to buy charcoal and fluid to use it. We also bought items for us to survive living w/p power for 5 days. I told the caretaker about the power deal later that evening then his wife showed up next afternoon realized line to house was cut from pole went on to tell us her husband and supervisor from power co had had a bad argument and the supervisor cut the line because of fight.
This house has holes in the floors some haven't pushed all the way thru yet and are covered w carpet but move under weight if you step on them. Windows that do open have gaps all around them as they weren't put in correctly some being held in place by piece of wood nailed across them to keep them from falling in or out. There are exposed wires all over one of the double window middle support is rotten looks like termites had a feast on it. The roof leaks and in room I took as my bedroom the area that was once a fireplace has been covered w particle board w drywall taped over bottom. The wall was flush against rest of the wall when we moved in now it has a place at bottom of particle board that's bowed out about 3" there are cracks at the bottom as well as new areas we can hear it move it's rained last couple days and roof leaks down the particle board down onto the drywall taped across actual opening to fireplace so matter of time before it falls in as well as parts of the ceiling in many other rooms. The caretaker is just putting up particle board all over house and over rotten wood just like he's gonna do w the siding.
In order to have hot water we have turn water heater on/off at fuse box we didn't think about hot water side of faucet leaking causing water heater to constantly run about 4-5 days after I had water turned on got a text from power co stating our acct balance was low we needed make a payment, had to choose the pay as you go option on power as deposit way too high for us, when power was turned on the caretaker was told to put up siding around meter as soon as possible which hasn't been done yet.
The best thing that could happen to this house is to have it torn down its just not safe to live in and I invite anyone to come look at it w your own eyes. I've read about houses being condemned and renters being paid relocation fees to evacuate the house. That's what we'll need to get out of here as we're both disabled myself from a spine disease and a fall could be disastrous for me. We need to get out of here before w wall, ceiling or floor falls in so any advice on how to get the house condemned and us getting relocation fees to get moved out before something like this happens is much appreciated.
