Negative record on my credit report

What is the name of your state? California. I received a collection bill for something that shouldn't have gone to collections. I'm disputing that with the original creditor, meanwhile, if I pay the collection agency, how can I be assured it will not be recorded on my credit report? What guidelines does the collection agency have to follow?

If they agree to do a pay for delete, get it in writing--make sure it is very clear! The CA does not have to report the tradeline to the CRA's. But if you are disputing it, why pay the CA?
