We both own our homes.

We've lived in this semi rural community for almost 25 years.
2 acres with an empty field on the left and one neighbor on the right.
Same neighbor since we've moved here, he has 3 acres. We have
always been cordial, we and they generally keep to ourselves, wave
hello and that's it, fine with me.
About 2 years ago I was going out to my barn and heard a**hole,
looked and saw no one. Few weeks later, "hey jacka**, same, no one.
I knew the voice but couldn't believe it was directed at me but I knew
it was. I needed proof. A few weeks later my wife was in our driveway
and "a**hole" as his electric garage door was going down with him
inside! Yeah, he's tuff! Still I needed proof. He's abt 75 BTW.
Well, he was washing his truck one day and I decided to light a
fire in our chiminea and grill hot dogs with the kids. This sits in the
middle of my yard and it's a couple hundred feet from his property.
As I was lighting and he's washing I heard "jacka** gonna lie him a fire"
So, I had my proof! I calmly walked over to his truck and said Hey Don.
what's wrong? He looked up in shock like I wasn't supposed to hear
him, and stared at me for a while. I was polite that first time, and I
said Don, for a couple months I've been hearing jacka**, dumba**, etc.
Finally he said "you're a jacka**, get the F*** outa here", I said "let's
fix this" as he bent down washing, would not even look at me!

This has been recurring for a couple years now. He won't tell
me what the problem is so I don't know. His wife is nice and still
waves as we do to her. He's not senile. I maintain my yard. We
don't have parties or make noise in bed early, work early.
As I said, I maintain my yard. He is a yard freak! He owns every
yard implement there is, has a lawn service...............
My kids don't need to be in his yard, they have 2 acres to play in
and they have been instructed as well.

I have no use for him now. I didn't want to have the sheriff over
as I didn't want to escalate things. What I did do is call the sheriff
and asked what my options are. So now I call them at every
occurance and they log it. A couple times I lost my temper and
responded angrily but now I try to wave and smile BIG at him.
I think that works best! Then I have it logged!!

Honestly, I hate him now, I cannot enjoy my yard, wish he'd
move or something. No use for this A**!!!
Advice?
Thank you!

This is not a legal question. It's a intra-relationship question. You could move away from the coot. You could just ignore it.

Well, you could ask your wife to ask his wife if she knows what he is so mad about. Something has set him off and it may not even be something you did. It might be something he assumed you did.

His actions remind me of the early stages of my mother in law’s Alzheimer’s.
That's what I'm thinking as well.

Additionally, the neighbor might need a hearing aid.

I think the best way of dealing with the situation is to certainly not escalate it, and don't react with anger or hate.

Perhaps Mike can comment privately to the wife that her husband seems to be upset and ask if there is anything that you can do to help. There may be something Mike has actually done that has antagonized his neighbor, which may or may not be rectified, but if the man is in the early stages of Alzheimers, his wife could use a reality check and some compassion. The changes might have been so slow that she hasn't realized/accepted that there is something wrong, or she may know the problem but not have felt the need to share it with Mike and the other neighbors yet. However, I personally have found that I tend to be more understanding when I understand.

You sound like two kids.

Ignore him. End of story.
Well, I've been ignoring for 2+ years now. He got me once though after a family members funeral
and after taking my wife to the emergency room, same week. Id call what he's doing is taunting me.
I'd like to talk to his wife so maybe I can understand what's going on. Until then I'll continue to
ignore.
