I had been hounded by my credit card company for some time. I was out of work for a while and could not make payments (trying to keep my house and all). The debt went trough several collection agencies until it was picked up by a law office. Then I didn't hear anything for a long time. About a month ago I got a letter from the court telling me that there was a hearing and instead of only owing 10k USD now I owe 15K USD (court fees, interest and lawyer fees). They said I have to pay 35.00 a week. What I don't get is why I never received a court summons? Arent they supposed to have it hand delivered and get a signature, or send it certified mail? This all occurred in Connecticut. I would appreciate any advice.

A lot of people believe that 'proper service' requires hand or personal delivery, or in some states, service by certified mail. However, if these methods fail, some (most?) states do allow alternate service, which could include service on anyone at that address or even by publication in a newspaper.

In fact, CT allows service by just 'placing' the notice at the address:
CT Rules of Civil Procedure:
"Sec. 52-57.
Manner of service upon individuals, municipalities, corporations, partnerships and voluntary associations.
(a) Except as otherwise provided, process in any civil action shall be served by leaving a true and attested copy of it, including the declaration or complaint, with the defendant, or at his usual place of abode, in this state."

I would suggest you contact the original court and review the return of service to see how the service was done.
