What is the name of your state? UTAH

My name is Matthew from Ogden, Utah. I'm writing in
concern with a past employer by which is a
Vacuum distribution/sales center. My story is:
I called on a job ad in the newspaper stating $1400 a month,
customer service, please call for interview. I called and was setup
with an Interview. During the interview I specifically told her I was
17 but will be turning 18 on May 17, 2004, she said thats fine if my
parents wouldn't mind me working. After the interview, I was invited
back for 3 days of non-paid training. I went to the training, was told
i'd receive $1400 a month, plus $100.00 commission on every single sale
I make, and we were paid every single monday. Thinking this, I was
under the impression i'd make $350.00 a week with a paycheck waiting
for me on monday, plus whatever I sold.
The last day of training, Friday, April 9, 2004, Melody gave us
our papers, and said we would start getting paid that same day. I
signed the employment papers/contract, being 17, this contract would be
void, and they never made any contact with my parents to insure any
sorta working permission.
Finally, my job started. In training, they told us we'd just be
helping with paper work and blah blah blah. When the job started, they
ended up putting me to work on knocking on peoples doors, trying to do
door-to-door sales and all these things that were never in the job
description and never what I applied for. They worked us very hard,
from 10:30am until midnight. They never discussed the working hours
with us, they tried to hide everything they possible could from us new
recruits. The day I quit was on April 21, 2004 because I couldn't
handle the door knockings, it was horrible, I walked off the job and
got a ride to pick me up. I went in a couple days later to pick up my
paycheck. I made 5 sales, the boss told me that 4 of
them cancelled and I wouldn't receive any commission because the 5th
sale was sold at a very low low price. Then he sent me out the door
with no money or check in my hand.
So now, you can imagine me very disappointed, worked 11 days at
14 hours a day, and received nothing but sales experience in return.
This company recruits every single week, people quit everyday,
they must keep a stable flow of employees coming in so their business
can operate. They get about 5-15 people out of each recruitment class,
and basically lieing/ripping off each one of those people. I hate
having this happen to the citizens of Ogden City. I am on the city
youth council and I believe that this is hurting our city as well as
our state, what can I do to receive my wages or atleast make
this company become more of an ethical employer?

NOTE: I already contacted the Utah Department of Labor, they say they have no jurisdiction over door-to-door sales companies.

You can file a complaint with your state department of labor.

P.S. I would STRONGLY recommend that you edit your post to remove the name of the company. You don't want them suing you for defamation.
