My landlord has sold my apartment building as of today. I have not met the new landlord yet, but some people did come over a couple of days ago to snap pictures of the apartment. My current lease runs out this month, and the new landlord may want to remodel. At this time I live with my pregnant wife and our (almost) 2-year old daughter. A rent increase would be o.k., but if the landlord wants to empty out this building to remodel, how long do I have to keep myself and my family from being put out on the street? What are my rights residing in Massachusetts?

since YOU were negligent in demanding a new lease from the old owner...

he could have given you a renewal, not realizing, that the new lease would have been transferred to the new owner, and you would have another year to live there...

So you have a right to a 30 day notice, and since they have not given it to you as of yet, you can HUSTLE them for an extra month of living ther till the end of march. tell them its the law. you have to get a full 30 days, and unless they give you a nonrenewal notice TODAY, then you can stay till the end of March and they cannot raise the rent either, so March's rent will be the same as next month's, BUT they can raise Aprils rent to whatever they like...yes even a $500 a month increase just to get you out.

Also has the house closed yet? Then the new owner has your secuity deposit, it gets transferred to the new owner at the closing, maybe you can HUSTLE the new landlord into letting you use your security for march's rent, to free up some cash for moving expenses.
