What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NEW JERSEY

Hello,
Can someone please tell me if the lineal descendant pre-deceased the testator and has no dependants and surviving spouse or girlfriend what would happen to their share of the inheritance.
My brother in law passed on 12/15/07 and was named in his great aunts will along with my husband and others with equal shares as the stated.
Would my husband then inherit his brother's share being he is the only living direct relative?Their mother passed on 6/10/08.
If not then to whom would the share go to. Would it go to the executor, the lawyer handling the estate, the POA, the State of NJ???
Please note that it was not stated in the will of such provision so this has to be NJ law that I need to know. I have researched the above law and this dictates for a direct child/step child. I thank anyone with the proper information of which I am seeking
Chrissy
