What is the name of your state? Wisconsin

I am wondering if a parent's child of 20 is driving with no auto insurance, can the parents be held liable if the child is at fault in an automobile accident, if he is still living at home? We are most concerned about this, especially if there are injuries involved. Thanks in advance for your replies.

My response:

As long as the parents' name(s) are not on the title as an owner, then no. When a person turns 18, they are, under the law, an adult responsible for their own liabilities in life. It doesn't matter where they live.

To the extent the 20 year old is allegedly doing something -- such as an errand, getting groceries, etc. -- and could be regarded as as an agent for the parents while doing the act, the parents could be held liable, much as a corporation could be held liable if an employee would be doing a corporate errand while using his own car. It's easy to claim that he was doing an errand, even if an accident occurs at 3 AM while he was out on a date.
