What is the name of your state? Missouri

I was in a minor accident this weekend - I'm guessing my fault because I rear-ended the guy thanks to some black ice on the road. The police were not called, no one was injured, information was exchanged and we were on our way.

There was no damage to my car at all, his plastic rear bumper now has a hole in it thanks to my license plate... totally cosmetic damage to a mid-90's model Taurus.

Anyway, 'my' insurance company called me today to take a statement re: what/where/when/etc. After completing all of the information, the woman who called informed me that I've been driving without insurance since August. She insisted that a cancellation notice had been sent out to me on Aug 22 of this year. I never received a cancellation notice.

The guy that I ran into has already left a voice mail for me this morning, and I don't want to talk to him until I know what to say/whether it's acceptable to just insist that his insurance company contact me.

Advice? This is something I NEVER thought I'd be faced with.

Have you got proof that you have paid your insurance premiums since August?

Have you moved since August (or otherwise changed address)?

PS

Reinstate your insurance today.
I'm working on that right now. I'm also trying to get copies of my bank statement from August/September because I thought that I'd paid 6 months insurance at that time, rather than the one month charge.

However, let's assume for a minute that I really am stupid enough to 1) not pay my insurance and 2) not even realize I wasn't paying it - because that is a possibility with the way things have been going lately.

If this guy calls back (and he will), can I refuse to speak to him and simply tell him to have his insurance company contact me? He was a ginormous jerk @ the accident and I don't really expect him to behave better since I'm guessing he knows I'm insuranceless. He really struck me as the type of person who would attempt to bully the poor stupid girl into agreeing to something by m aking all kinds of threats and stuff.

What, exactly are my rights as far as communicating with this guy directly vs. his insurance company?

Just tell him that you need two estimates and after he gives them to you, you will get back with him.

An additional note: This other driver's insurance co. does not have to be involved at all if he/she so chooses since this accident was no-fault of his.
