What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

My brother in law wants to file BK due to high medical bills and high cc debt, from years ago. He had no income last year, filed no taxes in 08. He is presently working and will file taxes in the upcoming season. Can he still file BK now if he had no income and was supported mainly by his girlfriends income?

However, he WILL have to dig up at least the last 2 years worth of tax returns, possibly 4 years, as well as a LOT more paperwork such as a years worth of bank statements, insurance policies, and a whole lot more.

The documentation requirement seems to vary quite a bit from district to district. The trustees in either of districts I file in don't want to see near the amount of documentation Lady listed. In cases that the debtor didn't need to file taxes in the previous year, the trustee has been satisfied with the returns for the most recent year for which there was a need to file taxes.
