Hello. I live in Kansas and my question is. Does my ex-roommate, whom I was renting a room inside is home, have the right to sue me if I did not sign any type of lease with him? He claims that I owe him $2,000.00 for leaving without giving him 2 months notice plus a deposit. First of all when I told him that I was moving out, he said as long as I give him 2 months notice. I asked him what he was talking about. He said you have to give me two months notice. Well when I went and looked at the room his girlfriend was the one I talked with, not him. I asked about deposit and she stated that it's 2 months rent. I told her that I could not pay that, and that I would be doing good to pay them rent. Then she stated well we aren't going to worry about that, we just need to get you here. Then two days before I was to move in she's moves out because him and her had a disagreement. Which meant me living alone with 4 other men. I had no choice because I had nothing else lined up so I moved in. I paid my first months rent, and then he inquired about the deposit. I was puzzled, because his girlfriend evidentally didn't tell him that I could not pay a deposit. However, I paid my rent for the 2 months that I lived there. I wanted out of there because there was to much stuff going on in that house that I wanted no part of. It would have been like being in the wrong place at the wrong time if the owner was caught. Plus the two months that I lived there I was very ill for most of the time just an unhealthy enviroment. So I was wondering does he have a case, since I never signed any type of lease aggreement, and the verbal aggreement was with his girlfriend whom doesn't even live there. Please advise. Thanks
