My son was recently suspended from school for drinking on a school trip. He was given a suspension memorandum that explicitly stated he is no longer able to attend any school trips without me or his mother as a chaperone.

His prom is coming up in the next few days and one of his friends told him that he won't be able to go to prom because it is considered a school trip; however, he already bought his ticket, and about 1,500 euro worth of clothes, ect. for his senior prom.

He says his memorandum stated school "trips" ( I vaguely remember the same thing) and he even asked to have it clarified and all that was told was he cannot attend any field trips such as the senior trip to holiday part, ect without me and/or his mother as chaperone(s). If he is denied enterence to prom as it isn't a school trip, but rather a school activity such as pep ralleys, bonfires, ect. which aren't school "trips" where we both have to sign a permission slip and medical release form, and use school transportation, ect.

He told us that if he is denied enternce to prom he is determined to sue the school for neglecting to tell him prom was a school "trip" and he isn't allowed to attend it without us (who won't be able to attend) knowing full well that he was a senior and would naturally attend the senior prom. He doesn't know...well anything about this and honestly, neither do I. Does he have a case as it is a big sum of money involved (1,500-1,700 euro) and his senior prom and all? I'd appreciate if you could get back to me on this and I can be prepared to tell my son what he can expect/if he should file a lawsuit, ect.

Thank you,

Scott

he can expect to be laughed out of court.

If you are so intent that he attend, (personally as the parent of two teenagers, if it were my kid, no way is my drinking embicile son gonna be going to any proms) then do what the order states, attend as chaperones.

And keep him away from the punch bowl:eek:

Two questions for you:

Where (exactly) do you intend to file this lawsuit?

and

Why do you think your doper son should be rewarded for his behavior?

Tell your idiot son that he needs about $50,000 before any attorney will subject themselves to the stress of suing the Department of Defense. Add to that the fact that he could very easily have ended your career and had all of you shipped back to the states.

Instead of coming on here to coddle the idiot, you should be laying down the law to him.

He has no case. And no sense of propriety.

Why is your son listening to a friend? He needs to ask the school whether the prom is considered a trip subject to his suspension notice. If it is, you need to inform him that is part of the penalty for drinking on a school trip when it wasn't permitted. You should tell him, he's not going to the prom because you and his mother can't meet the requirements for his attendance, so the school won't have a chance to deny him entrance.

Why are you humoring your son by engaging in any discussion about lawsuits? You need to remind him that he broke the rules and must suffer the consequences. You should be telling him that you are not entertaining the notion of suing anyone over this matter, even if it were permissible.
