What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? AL

What are the usual steps the court takes when someone is required to be present at a custody hearing but cannot do so because of medical complications?

What steps the court should take?

Depends on how the court feels. Anything from a continuance to a warrant. That's where "discretion" comes in.

You really need to check with your court on this.

In my court, you can't file for a continuance, if the other party filed the motion the court date is for. Only the one who filed can file for a continuance.

In my court, you have 3 choices, get the other party that filed, to file for a continuance. Or hire a lawyer, who then asks the court if they can represent you, without you being there on that day. Or show up. If you don't follow these rules, you will be in default, end of story.

So wise to check your own courts procedure on this.
