I purchased a motorcycle on ebay that didnt have a title. It was my understanding that getting a title wouldnt be a big deal but boy was I wrong. I purchased it from a guy who purchased it from a wrecker company. It was abandoned there for over two years but the wrecker company never did any paperwork to get the title. The wrecker company has sense gone out of business. Everyone I talk to tells me that the wrecker company is the only place that can get the title. What do I do?? I have already checked and it is not stolen. Its a 2002 bike but is worthless if I cant legally ride it. I live in Kentucky but the bike was purchased in Mississippi. There has to be a way to get a title for it. I was told that I had to get the wrecker company to fill out an affidavite of abandonment, contact the original owner and the finance company if it had a lien on it. But like I said the wrecker company is out of business and because of some newly past privacy act noone can tell me who the original owner is or if it has a lien. Please Help!!!!

Thanks

If the wrecker company had to be licensed by the state -- some companies do -- or if it was incorporated, an llc, a partnership or something of that nature then legally it was recognized by the state, try the secretary of state's website for the state where the wrecker company was. Licensing is public record. Business organization is public record. There should be a contact person listed for it on the website or available through the Sec. of State. Obtain contact person name. Contact contact person. If number no good, you now at least have another name to start with.

I really have my doubts that the wrecker company can be contacted. The owner was very ill at the time and there is a very good chance that he has passed away but I will try. Would there be any way to do it as an individual??

Thanks

If the owner died and you know the owner, go to the estate. This is very complicated to explain how to do it. It can be relatively simple to put into practice because I have done it in the past -- tracking people down that is -- however to walk someone through all the various possibilities is difficult. If the owner died, there would be a probate court proceeding. You could track down the next of kind then. But you sound as though you know that the wrecker company was a sole proprietorship. So if the guy died, he would have a death certificate and probate should have been opened.
