I am in Massachusetts.

There is no written agreement (no signatures, no paper) between my landlady and me. There was only a verbal understanding that I would be a tenant (out of a group of 4 girls, including myself). The landlady turned down several offers after I told her I would definitely be a tenant.

She says that by showing my "100% commitment" by meeting with her in person and expressing it in emails (not sent to her, but to our "group representative" to the landlady; my words: "I am 100% committed") she can take legal action.

Can she force me to remain a tenant or at least pay her the 1st month's rent?!!?!

1st girl has to stay there (she is our group representative).
2nd girl doesn't have another housing option so she will be stuck there.
3rd and 4th girls are my friend and me.

Oops, by "my friend and me" I meant to explain that we are BOTH leaving. This leaves 2 girls out of the original 4 tenants (including my friend and me). It brings the $3000/month rent from $750/month/person to $1500/month/person.

Ouch, I know. :(
