What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? West Virginia. I rented to a friend I attend college with. I requested early on that he put all utilities in his name. I called the power company and he had transferred power, so I stupidly didn't check if he did on remaining utilities. He paid the rent in a timely fashion, however he recently moved out without notifying me. I found that utilities that were left in my name are outrageously delinquent. I called him on his cell, and when I asked for his new address, he hung up on me. I will go to Small Claims Court. When I went to my home (where he was living), he had left utility bills scattered everywhere, plus old cell phone bills. I was able to get his SSN and his e-mail address, plus phone numbers for calls he had made to places in the area he moved to. All told, he owes me $1,340. What are my chances of winning in SCC?

You ask the wrong question, what are your chances he will ever pay even if you get a judgment? Yes, you can file in small claims court and probably win a judgment, based on what you say, but I doubt you will ever collect it.

thanks for responding so quickly. Here's more info.

I hear from his friends that the reason he moved is because he found a pretty lucrative job. Could I get his wages garnished?
