Help Please! I signed a non-compete agreement

I am trying to start as a freelance graphic artist, the company that I work for made me sign an non-compete agreement when I started working for the that states that the I agree not to compete directly or indirectly with the business of the company and assigns during the period of employment and 3 years following termination meaning that I can not own, manage, operate, consult or be employed in a business similar to or competitive with the present business and extends to the geographic areas as the company generally transacts within and upon a beach hereof the company shall be entitled to injuctive relief together with money damages. is there any way around it? do I have to quit and wait three years? Im not trying to take their customers away, I just want to start my own thing and make a decent living.
Please help me I am very confused.State of North Carolina.
