I've been offered an awesome Director positon working as the communication link bewteen my new company and the telephone carriers. I'm required to sign a non-compete that prohibits my working for a competitor or customer for 24 months!! Will I need to change industries if I ever leave this company? How binding is a non-compete?

florida. signed a non compete agreement for 12 months, october
2001,timeshare industry, at the time there were no other timeshare sales office in the area. there is now a new one . have
applied and been offered employment. would like to accept. however the new company informed me that the company I work
for have sent them a letter stating that non compete agreements
have been signed and not to employ anyone from the company.
What do you suggest I do. I may add that I am paid commission
only. Thank you Toni F

Have an attorney look at the non-compete agreement. Whether non-competes are legal at all is subject to state law (although I believe they are legal in Florida) and, when they are legal, the scope of them is also subject to state law. The exact terms would have to be reviewed by a local attorney.
