I am a recruiter in the business of placing computer programmers. Is it true that, although my non-compete agreement does not explicitly state this, I am forbidden to work placing computer programmers for some amount of time after I leave my current employer? If so, what is that amount of time?

If the above is true: As far as I know, it has been at least 18 months since any of my current colleagues has placed a mechanical engineer, and I have never worked with MEs. I will be accepting a position with another company placing mechanical engineers. What's the likelihood that a court would find me liable for damages to my current employer?

No one who has not read your non-compete agreement can comment on the terms of it. You will have to show the agreement to a local attorney.
