I live in California and have not paid my Waste Management trash bill in 11 years and now they want a lump sum of $7100 or they will put a lean on my house. Except for an occasional email I have not heard from them. I would have thought they would have contacted me sooner about this. What is my legal obligation in this matter?

They almost certainly CAN put a lien on your house. Chances are they are entitled to collect the full amount. While the statute of limitations is only four years, it runs on accounts with recurring charge from the time the LAST charge is made. You should probably negotiate a time frame to pay down what you owe.

Not hearing from them is no excuse. You knew you had to pay it from the getgo.

Figure out a way to pay it before you get sued and they tack on lawyer fees, interest and court costs.

If they get a judgment against you, things will just get a lot worse.

Your legal obligation is to pay your bill(s).
