In Aug. 1999, I became a survivor of domestic violence which left me a paraplegic. I filed for divorce the following month in the state of Alabama. My now ex husband refused to sign divorce papers and we ended up in court. He did not show up that day and I was granted divorce in Sept. 2000. At that time, the judge granted that my ex be responsible for all medical bills that were a direct result of the injuries he inflicted upon me and were unpaid by insurance. However, the majority of those medical bills are from medical facilities in the states of Tennessee and Georgia. My ex husband is now in prison, but is not attempting to comply with the divorce settlement.
Also, he made some charges upon our joint credit cards that he has not attempted to pay and has a bank loan that we both signed to purchase a harley using the equity of our home. The harley was sold to pay his lawyer's fees before his criminal trial. Our home was foreclosed and resold while I was in the hospital for almost 4 months. I was also granted the cost of the harley and that the house be sold and any equity become mine. I have received nothing. Even though the state crime victim's compensation commission assisted with medical bills in the amount of approx. $4,000, I still have approx $12,000 in medical bills alone. What options do I have in trying to collect these amounts and what options do I have to gain compliance of those divorce settlements?
