What is the name of your state? New Jersey

My son is attending high school in New Jersey so that he can play ice hockey at a higher level because there was no team for him to play on in our state (it's a southern state). The school district made us sign papers saying that the people he lives with has custody of him. My son is struggling in the school there, NJ is very ahead of NC in education.

My son wants to come home to try and salvage his grades. The host family is saying that the high school is threatening to charge the host family one year's worth of education or $9000 if he leaves. Supposedly, the school also said that they want him to graduate and attend there next year.

I find this hard to believe and I think the family may be doing this. My question is can a school prevent a child from leaving by threatening to charge a family with his education?

Is it a private or public school?

That's the question of the day. And, was he given a scholarship/tuition waiver conditional on his playing hockey for the school?

Unfortunately, this is happening all over the country. We have a basketball team playing for the state championship tomorrow who (with the help of two court decisions) was allowed to bring in a "ringer" from Brazil, claim he was emancipated to skirt the league rules, and add 25 ppg to their game. Private Catholic high school. No one ever answered the question about who was paying the $10K tuition and living expenses. It sounds like your son (and the school) has benefitted from the same situation.
