What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I have 2 gift certificates purchased in 2004 which have "Date of Issue" as "Valid 1 Year from date of issue". The date of issue is not printed on the certificate anywhere and I could only confirm when they were purchased by calling Northwest Airlines customer service.

I was informed they're expired and the money is "just lost" to quote Chris the service rep.

In order to have the money refunded back to their purchaser she informs the request would have had to have been done within the 1 year of date of issue.

My understanding is this violates California state law under 1749.5-51 however when I brought this up it was completely dismissed and I was given yet another "customer service" address to write to.

What is the real story here and can I either redeem the certificates or have them refunded back to the purchaser (mom)?

**A: what did the reps at Delta and the state consumer protection office tell you when you inquired?
