I am a teacher in a public school. Our contract states that we are to have a 30 minute duty-free lunch period.

The school board just passed a policy that states that teachers may not leave the building during their lunch time.

Do employers have the right to require employees to stay at their work location during their lunch?

Are you paid for your lunch time ? are you under a teachers contract that allready addresses this issue ?

Yes, they are.

It MAY mean that they have to pay you for the lunch time. Check with the state DOL.

contract information

The only relevant wording in the contract is this:

"Each teacher shall have a 30 minute duty-free lunch."

and

"A teachers work day will be eight hours long inclusive of lunch."

So if you are paid for eight hours and that includes a 30-minute lunch, then it's a paid lunch break. Therefore your employer is free to prohibit you from leaving the premesis during lunch.
