What is the name of your state? Iowa
My husband and I were hired to take care of 2 hog confinements. In lieu of payment, we were given a 3br house, rent free.
I was injured while doing these chores in September of 2005. I immediately called the boss and informed her of my injury. I was then told that I was covered on workman's comp and to go ahead and go to the ER.
No sooner did I begin to finish the work there, she called me back and told me that I was not, in fact, covered by their workman's comp, and that I was "not listed" on it, due to the fact that I was not actually "paid".
What are the legalities here? I did go to the ER, and have had to pay the nearly $500 for all the services I received. Is there any way I can recoup that money from these bosses?
I thank you in advance for any help. What is the name of your state?

Make your WC claim, it is not your fault your employer failed to properly inform their carrier, you were paid in kind for your services, so they would be required to pay you directly for your injuries.

Please find a local attorney. In many states farm laborers are exempt and are not covered under workers' compensation law.
