Not stated on lease

What is the name of your state? California

I signed a month to month lease for an apt. I had to end up putting my notice to vacate less than 30 days bc of a job relocation. I read through the lease and notice there were no penalties listed and only it stated that a 30 day notice should be given. I've been renting forever at many different places and EVERY lease I've read stated the penalties of a short notice. So my question is can a landlord penalize you monetarily if it's NOT stated on the lease??

Not everything needs to be in a lease. State laws usually state what the penalty is for not giving proper notice. I believe that in CA, a 30 day notice can be given at anytime. You can chose to vacate earlier, but the landlord is still entitled to be paid for the full 30 days.

Any issue not in a lease may be addressed by your states laws SO if a lease doesn't spell out that a whole rental period of notice is required then a landlord cannot force a longer notice period onto a tenant then in your state a 30 day notice can be given and can be at any time so if you had moved in to the place on April first but gave notice on April 15th you were going to move out , then you would owe thru May 15th

Correct. California Civil Code Section 1946.1(B)

A tenant giving notice pursuant to this section shall give notice for a period at least as long as the term of the periodic tenancy prior to the proposed date of termination.
