i live in new york state. i gave my landlord my 30 day notice on the 12th of the month and told him i'd pay half my rent for half of the next month i'd be there. he said the law was that notice was to be given 30 days from the day of the month you moved in, therefore paying for a whole month. telling me it was illegal to pay partial rent if you were only there for part of a month. this just doesn’t seem to make sense to me and other people I've talked to say he's wrong. that you only have to pay for the day's you are actually residing in the apartment. i don't have a lease, and I know that's dumb, but I wasn't the one originally renting the apartment. i moved in with someone. the landlord told us that he was not renting the apartment to me so if I couldn't come up with the rent it was the other persons' problem. recently the other person moved out. since then i've only had to pay for 1 month myself. now i need to leave the apartment. what am i exactly responsible for?
