Now how long does a DWI effect your insurance? 5yrs? 10?

Accident - Bankruptcy - Criminal Law / DUI - Business - Consumer - Employment - Family - Immigration - Real Estate - Tax - Traffic - Wills   Please click a topic or scroll down for more.

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA, TX, everywhere.

I'm applying for new auto insurance and they are all asking for DWI's within the last 10 years. My DWI was about 5 years ago so I was playing with the dates to see if there was a difference if I said it was 4 years ago, vs. 5, or 10 years ago, there's not, but it's a big hike over no DWI.

On Progressive, Geico, and e-surance, having a DWI anywhere from 3 years, to 10 years old on my record brings up my Rates $400 a year.

I'm not sure if it still shows up on the driving record after 5 but of course if you state on your application that you havn't had one within 10 years when it's been say 7 and they don't find it but then have to pay out for a big claim they could probably void the policy and you could be accused of fraud.

Yippiee. The DWI fun never ends, when I get close to the 10 year mark I bet they start asking within the last 20 years.

sheesh.

Depends on the state. Some states have the rate scoring set by statute. In others it's up to the insurance company itself to determine what rate class or even if they will write you a policy given your particular driving record.
