I am a nursing student and I applied for a p/t job at a county hospital in North Carolina. My application and an interview were denied because eleven years ago I was convicted of a B&E charge. I was told that if you have ever been convicted of a felony then you could not work for this hospital. To my understanding there is a federal law that says an employer can check your criminal history record for the last ten years. I went to the clerk of court to get a copy of my history report. The county I live in lets employers go back as far as 1985. I feel that this is not justified. The hospital in question also lets their employees take a leave of absence for problems such as drug addiction but will not hire someone whom has been convicted of a felony eleven years ago. Please advise me on this matter. I am afraid that this may hender my nursing career.
