Yes, I'm writing from Canada despite the fact this is a US based site but it deals with slander and from what I understand slander and defamation definitions are almost uniform throughout jurisdictions employing Common Law.
The matter is this: There's a person at a religious organization we're involved with who has been the source of a host of false reports concerning myself and my wife who is an employee of the church and has been for 8 years. She has an unblemished employment record. The "person" also works at the church but has only been employed for 6 months and is working on a contract basis.
This person was very friendly with us and our family of 7 children but after she was hired she turned on us and initiated a smear campaign that has tremendously lowered my reputation within the organization. I have an email from the "head " of the organization written a year ago (before the smear campaign) "that I was a respected and highly regarded member". Presently, we've lost friends and it would be easy to compile a list of activities and false reports that indicates a pattern of misdirected and malicious actions designed to undermine my wifes employment and the programs she administers.
The person was seen just last week attempting to destroy one of my childrens jackets (no big deal, but she shouldn't be doing that while working, or while doing anything else for that matter). We understand she's going through a tough time quitting her tabacco habit, which could partially explain some of the weird behaviour on her part, but that has nothing to do with facts. We no longer wish to be her punching bag. The organization has reason to hope the matter will dry-up and disappear but they seem unwilling to act and they have a history of sweeping troubles under the rug. The damage is accumulating and I'm being driven to distraction so much that I'm having trouble operating my business. My wife want's to quit but we cannot afford to lose her benefit package she recieves as an employee.
Again, we can prove she's been lying about us (for no explainable reason, we've done nothing wrong, although she may be jealous and power hungry and willing to do almost anything to get what she wants). I'm confident she has knowledge of some criminal law, but like most Canadians, I doubt she knows what "tort" means and has no idea about the existance of civil laws and still thinks she can conduct herself in the manner of a school girl when dealing with "reasonable" persons.
