What is the name of your state? CA

last year we had to come in for work on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. This year, these dates are recognized as federal holidays. Is is safe to say that private companies will follow suit with regards to these days being holidays?

**A: no, since my workers will work on those days.

Is is safe to say that private companies will follow suit with regards to these days being holidays? No. Private sector companies don't have to provide holidays, paid or otherwise, AT ALL, although most do. You need to ask your employer what their holiday schedule is. Anybody else's is irrelevant.

A great many people mistakenly believe that ALL employees are entitled by law to Federal holidays.

This is not the case. Federal holidays are guaranteed to Federal employees only. As Beth pointed out, private employers are not required to offer ANY holidays, Federal or otherwise.

Consider. Hotels do not close on holidays - in fact, holidays are their biggest work days. Someone has to man the desk and clean the rooms. Hospitals don't close for holidays - someone has to care for the patients. Many restaurants don't close - someone has to cook and wait table. Police and fire stations must be staffed. And you can bet that there'll be a lot of people doing their shopping on December 24 - retail stores won't be closing. Someone has to be there.

Convenience stores don't close. Many gas stations don't close. Many retail stores don't close except on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Ever go to a shopping mall on the afternoon of December 24th? It's all guys who are desparately looking for a gift for their wife or girlfriend. :D
