My husband makes a substantial income but my own salary is at poverty level. I am chronically ill and work part time from home. Children are grown and gone. Our marriage has become unbearable and I would like to move out of our home. Could I experience negative financial consequences in a settlement for doing so? I can't afford a lawyer, but would like to instigate divorce. I have very little savings of my own. How should I proceed? We're in California.
