My sister, who is a single mother to a baby girl, is renting a two bedroom apartment in Oklahoma. When she went to rent the apartment, she asked the manager for a one bedroom. The manager told her that in Oklahoma, state law requires a child to have her own room. Is this true?

It sounds unlikely, but you have to check Oklahoma law to answer the question.

If you are going to write back that it is not really the law, so can your sister get out of her lease in order to get to get a 1-bedroom apartment, the answer is no.

The truth is, that the child really does need her own room, even if its not the law.

lease

No, my sister is not trying to get out of a lease. The lease is already up. She has not been asked to sign another one and is planning to move into my parent's old house as soon as they do some renovation.

I was asking because it just didn't seem right to me that there would be a law requiring a child to have his/her own room. What about families that can't afford an apartment or house big enough to allow each child to have a room?

Personally, I think it is really a luxury, which in this country is a culturally accepted norm, for a child to have his/her own room.

My next question is, where in the Oklahoma statutes would I look for such a law? What key words would you suggest I use?

Thank you.
