Old Friend is smearing my name

This is a very long story, but to make is short. About 2 years ago an old friend was going around spreading lies and rumors about me to everyone we both knew, thus causing many people to stop talking to me. As time went by I decide to just roll with it and not care what he was doing, however I just found out from my brother (whom I hadn't talked to in over a year) that this "old Friend" has been going around saying that I was telling people that "my brother raped me and beat me when we were kids". This is absolutely disgusting and not true. Also come to find out this is the reason that my brother had not contacted me for over a year. This "old friend" also told me that my brother was mad at me and thought I was lazy. (this was told to me, by him, before he stated the lies about me saying that stuff).

There is a lot more that has been said by him about me. I want this to stop! What can I do?

I never said any such thing to him nor could I ever even think such a thing!?!

I would love to do that, however I am married and we have a child.
So, I would like to take legal action against him, not for money, but for the principal of it! I want to clear my brother's name and my name. I want his lies brought out in a legal way for all to see.

O.K. take about $10,000 out of petty cash and sue him for libel per se and then in about 2 years when the judge rules against you, you'll discover that there's not much you can do except ignore the idiot.

How can people get away with this type of crap? It's insane and wrong. I have lost all faith in the justice system
