What is the name of your state? Ohio Can Equifax keep an old credit card debt on the current yearly credit report? The debt is Providian 1992 I didnt even know this joint account with me on it as permission to use it existed. Can I ask them to remove it and contest it. It is for $15,000 and hasnt been paid on by my exhusband since 1992 and I have no money. It is ruining my moving to another apartment when they do a credit check.
Also, can an apartment look up information that I cannot see on the yearly credit report? I dont know how this works. The only bad mark I can see is this. all the others say good standing, pay on time etc. Only the old Providian. I thought a debt that old could not be allowed on your current credit report.

Negative items may not remain on your report longer than 7 1/2 years after the date of first default. Normally, that would be the last time a payment was made on the account.

Look on the report for "date of last activity" -- that is usually pretty close to the date of last payment.

If more than 7 1/2 years have passed, send a letter to Equifax and ask them to remove the item.

If you are unsure if that is a joint account or you are only an authorized user, you will need to ask Providian.
