I got a speeding ticket two months ago, 16mph over, and just today, I got a letter from the DMV saying that my insurance company has terminated my coverage. I am on a family plan, and have had no prior violations to this. They never even told me about it, this is the first letter I've received about it, and it's not even from the company itself! Can an insurance company just drop me like that, half-way through the term? That seems rather dubious since they never even informed me about this.

What did your insurance agent say when you visited his office and showed him the documentation from the DMV?

Good for you. Let's just hope it was a DMV screw up and nothing worse.

Do not ignore this problem.

It will not go away.

I'm definitely not going to forget about this. However, the really galling part is that my insurance company never contacted me about this--they told the DMV and the DMV in turn informed me. I went uninsured for almost a week before I knew anything was wrong. Is this even legal on the insurance company's part? Because that really irks me that they never told me.

Did you take care of the speeding ticket?

Despite whether you knew or didn't really does not matter. Did you have a claim during this period? No you didn't. You have ZERO damages. End of story.

Ok, this wasn't as bad as I thought. Some goon at the DMV just mis-typed my car VIN and thus all this trouble. The fact that I got a letter from the DMV saying I had to take a driver improvement class dated on the same day as the insurance cancellation notice is what really scared me. The insurance agent assured me that if I was ever "terminated" (what a terrible word to use!), I'd be notified directly.

And I was only wondering for future reference, in case something DID happen and I was unknowingly uninsured. End of story.

that's why I switched from Geico to Allstate. even though Allstate doesn't have an awesome mascot like Geico's gecko, their "terminations" are "cancellations". :D
