What is the name of your state? Florida

Not wanting to end to up Terri Schiavo and her husband, I have been researching living wills. There are many websites where you can set up and purchase aliving will. Are these legit or just a cruel way for someone to make money? Thanks.

There is no reason for you to have to buy one, there are many orgnizations that will provide you one for no charge.

I heard on the news last night that even though you have a living will, people can still do whatever they want to you. What's the purpose of a living will then?

I agree with GAAtty. You can get valid living wills from numerous places for free. Or you can simply 'google' your state name and "living will" to find numerous free downloads.

In most cases, a valid living will can direct what efforts should be made or not. However, there are always ways that a persons wishes can be denied... such as the person holding the living will simply denying its existence.
In any case, it is far more likely that a persons living will requests will be honored, than if one never existed at all.

I also agree with the replies from the other posters regarding obtaining the info for free. You also may want to check out Registry for Living Wills (they include medical POA, etc. and is state specific). You can change your document at any time without cost. The Registry stores this and all changes.

The most important thing is making sure others can find your information. I don't remember if the Registry also provides a card that you can carry in your wallet. However, making one yourself with your registry number is easy to do so you can carry it in your wallet.

Whatever your choose to do, have a copy of your directives filed in your medical records at your physician's office, keep a copy on your person, and keep a copy on your refridgerator (EMT's are being trained to look there for one). Do a google search for the registry (there's one in Canada too - do not use Canada's registry).

Like what is happening in between the Shindlers and Terri's husband in FL, your Advanced Directives can still be disputed. Read Chapter 765, Advanced Directives, of the FL statutes.

Do not use the examples given in the statutes because the examples need to be updated to be more inclusive.
