I am not sure that I would regard that as a huge potential change. Its a bill...which might or might not get out of committee, and if it does or might or might not pass. The bill wants to change the age of emancipation from 21 to 19.
I am also not sure that the bill would necessarily be in anyone's best interest. Yes, in Indiana child support goes to age 21, but it mostly applies to adult children who go to college, because its relatively easy to emancipate a child who doesn't go to college or doesn't have a bonafied disability. The bill still allows for college expenses to be shared which is a potential problem for an ncp. The way the law reads now the child's tax exemption and federal tax education credits are still subject to being alternated...and currently education credits are VERY generous. If this passes the exemption for the adult children would no longer be subject to being alternated...so an ncp might end up on the hook for a share of college expenses without getting alternating rights to claim the adult child's exemption and education credits.
