What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC and CO
I am in Colorado. I cannot leave. I am the sole caregiver for my disabled elderly Mom.
So..I bring that up because I have an issue with a mechanic in NC.
Back story is this..last summer I was living and working in NC. I purchased an old RV. It had several problems, but..it ran. It have electrical issues ...lights, signals, that sort of thing.
I no sooner brought this from Florida to BC (I drove it those 700 miles myself), when this family emergency occurred. Being the only child...it fell to me to leap on a plane and get to Colorado. It took me a few weeks to stabilize things in Colorado enough to go back and wind up everything In NC.
Here is where it went wrong. I met a mobile mechanic. He showed me his yard with various vehicles being restore/repaired. Showed me his portfolio of work done on other vintage vehicles. I hired him. The RV was driven over to his place.
After weeks of failing to communicate with me...he started asking for me to ship various parts to him. The work would be extensive as I wanted all the old wires, cables, hoses, belts replaced up front. He tells me that it needs a new starter...I order shipped to him. He tells me it needs a new alternator...again I order it and ship to him. He has me order over $200 in wire and battery cable..delivered to him. The list of parts goes in and on. But..still, I get no progress reports.
Then, after about 6 weeks...he stops talking altogether. Not even text or email. After 3 months, I hire someone else in Jacksonville and send him a text to deliver the RV there...with all the parts, etc.
The RV was delivered. The battery (new) was dead. Several of the cells were testing dead...so I had to buy yet another new battery. All those parts? None of them were delivered with the RV. The alternator was installed wrong, blowing up the ECM and starter. As the first week progressed with the shop in Jacksonville...it became obvious the mobile mechanics knew nothing about wiring. It cost me more than $1500 just to repair the damage that guy did.
Then..the steering wheel fell off! The mobile mechanic was paid to install a new ignition switch...he broke the steering mounts and tried to use masking tape wadded up to hold it in place. I am in terror of what could have happening on the highway with this! He knew what he did and didn't care who he might hurt! New steering column and mounts cost another $600 Purchasing all the parts he kept..$850.
So..I know I cannot go to small claims with this jerk. I cannot go to NC... I think I cannot sue him here in Colorado. BUT.... what I can do is publish my story all over the craigslist from Richmond to Hilton Head...making sure everyone knows to avoid this dangerous mechanic (I use the term loosely).
Opinion?
