What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? vt...I was injured at work. I have been out since Jan 14th and was informed my settlement check (not much) will be sent out next week. The problem is I was fired after injury. I have been paying my child support on time for the last 3 years. Now I have no job and no income coming in monthly. I have been released recently to be able to work, so WC will not be consistent. I want to call the office of child support. How do I handle this....also.....I have been paying on 3 children...one is 18 on her own, and another turns 18 this June. But, the one turning 18 this June is handicapped. I really need to know how this is going to go...I am nervous. What advice can you give? tx

You need to contact your caseworker at CSE and explain about the W/C, etc. Be prepared to provide any documentation you have.

You also need to file for a modification for the child that is 18 now and on her own.

Is the nearly-18 year old able to care for him/herself? What is the level of disability? Child support for this child MAY be ongoing/permanent.

How old is the 3rd child?

He is autistic. why would cs be permanent? when he turns 18 wouldn't he be considered an adult? wouldn't social security come to play for him along with ssi? Are you saying I have to pay for child support the rest of my life? If this is true, then there are a lot of disabled adults with parents still alive who can be brought back to court based on their previous child support order for that child. If this is true then the courts should award 50/50 joint on adults with disabilities automatically once they turn 18. Seems unfair to moms and dads when one parent has full custody and the other has no say.

That isn't what I said Faith. But SOMETIMES, child support is ordered to be paid well beyond adulthood for disabled children.

I have NO IDEA if that's true in your case. In fact, it's likely that if it's not currently in the order, it wouldn't be added. BUT it IS something you need to be aware of.
